This Is Why You’re Not Changing

“My experience is what I agree to attend to.” - William James

Reflection:

There’s an idea in Quantum Physics that states "something does not exist until it is observed". Not in some mystical way but in a practical sense, what gets focused on becomes clear, reinforced and repeated. There are different versions of you that show up every day. There’s the version that’s disciplined, focused and follows through and there’s the version that hesitates, overthinks and falls off. Both exist however the difference is which one you give your attention to.

That’s what William James was getting at. Your experience isn’t just what happens to you it’s what you choose to focus on. And over time that focus shapes how you see yourself. But attention doesn’t come out of nowhere it’s driven by your beliefs.

This is something Nir Eyal talks about in his work. (Referring back to "Beyond Belief (2026)" The way you act every day is influenced by the story you carry about yourself. If you believe you’re inconsistent or undisciplined, your mind will naturally look for proof of that. You’ll notice every mistake, every missed workout, every moment you fall short and that becomes your reality.

On the other hand, if you start to shift that belief, even slightly, your focus begins to change. You start noticing when you do show up. When you follow through. When you make the harder choice instead of the easier one. Those moments and choices were always there but now you’re actually paying attention to them. And what you pay attention to grows.

That’s the loop most people are stuck in. Their belief tells them who they are, their attention looks for proof and their actions follow that pattern. Then those actions reinforce the belief and it keeps repeating.

Breaking that cycle doesn’t start with going all in or becoming perfect overnight. It starts with a small shift in what you believe is possible for you. Not fake confidence but a willingness to see yourself differently. From there, your attention starts to move and once your attention moves, your actions begin to follow.

You don’t need to become a completely different person in one day. You just need to start noticing and reinforcing the version of you that’s already trying to grow.

This connects back to the quote, its this idea that experience is shaped by what we attend to and when combined with how beliefs drive behavior, it shows a simple truth: what you believe influences what you notice and what you notice shapes who you become over time.

3 Actionable Steps:

1. Redirect your attention daily
Start noticing where your mind goes automatically. If you catch yourself focusing on what’s going wrong or what you’re not doing consciously shift it to one thing you did right that day... even if it feels small.

2. Build “proof moments” on purpose
Don’t wait for big wins. Create small daily actions that match the version of you you want to become (showing up to the gym, finishing a task, keeping a promise). The goal is to stack evidence that supports a new identity.

3. Challenge your default belief
When you think something like “I’m inconsistent” or “I always fall off" don’t accept it automatically. Pause and reframe it into something more accurate and growth based like: “I’m building consistency right now.” Then act from that version immediately.
