"Don’t chase motion, chase meaning. Check in with your why and let that guide every action."
Reflection:
Val (my girlfriend) and I spent the last week in Florida visiting her hometown and spending time with family. It was nice to slow down, catch up with people we care about and step away from the usual routines of life. The trip gave me some space to reflect.
One afternoon, I walked outside and sat down in the grass. The sun was out, the air was warm and for the first time in a while there was absolutely nothing demanding my attention. No phone in my hand. No schedule to follow. No one expecting anything from me. Just the sun overhead and the feeling of the grass underneath me. Most of us spend our days moving from one thing to the next. Working, training, checking off tasks, scrolling through social media. Life becomes a constant cycle of motion and it’s easy to forget to pause and ask: Why am I doing what I’m doing?
Reflection matters because it forces us to check in with our why. Social media makes that tricky. Everywhere we look, there’s an image of success dinners on a yacht, posting a perfect meal, driving a fancy car, or showing off a dream vacation. It can make us believe that if we just follow the “steps” we see online, we’ll get there too. Five steps here, ten steps there and suddenly it feels like success is a formula, like anyone could do it if they just follow along. But the truth is, the people who achieve real success whether it’s fitness, business, or personal growth aren’t just following someone else’s formula. They’ve aligned with their why. They’ve taken the time to ask themselves: What matters most to me? What kind of person do I want to be? What life do I want to build? That alignment is what fuels consistent effort and meaningful progress. What I am writing about can be applied to all kinds of goals, not just the “big” ones. Maybe it’s a fitness goal like hitting a new PR, improving mobility, or finally sticking to a training schedule. Maybe it’s a personal goal like journaling every day, meditating, or making time for your relationships. Maybe it’s a work goal, like finishing a project, learning a new skill, or taking steps toward a promotion. Whatever your goal may be without pausing to reflect, it’s easy to put all your energy into motion without purpose and moving fast but not moving toward what truly fulfills you.
I want you to ask yourself: are you pursuing your goals because you’ve truly committed to yourself and want to show up each day? Or are you chasing them because you’re running from insecurities, trying to prove something to others, or doing it simply because someone told you that you should? If we’re not in tune with our why which can be the deeper reason behind the actions we take we will most likely fall short of the goals we set. Without meaning behind your actions, all the effort in the world can start to feel empty and the results you’re hoping for can remain just out of reach.
Maybe that perfect body, the big house, or the flashy watch is something we want.. sure I won’t lie, it looks appealing. I love nice cars and big million dollar mansions but I have learned that chasing those things without reflection is like chasing smoke. You may look like you’re moving forward but internally, you can feel scattered, restless, or unfulfilled but reflection is what helps us dig deeper: Am I working toward what matters most to me? Is this goal about me, or am I chasing an image of success that someone else painted?
On our way home, I realized that sitting in the sun that afternoon gave me the space to process thoughts I hadn’t been able to put into words, a struggle I often have and part of why I write. I reflected on my life, my values, and what I want to build. While I think about these things regularly, this time felt different. It felt like I was connecting with the true depth of my why. Through the practices that help me center myself like the gym, meditation, journaling, writing, breath work, and the work I do with my clients it’s becoming clearer how my why can guide not just the next month but the next year, the next five years and beyond. Not perfectly and not all at once but enough to feel grounded in the direction I want to go.
I realized that clarity doesn’t come from pushing harder.
Now I’m not saying you shouldn’t push yourself or have goals... far from it. I have so many aspirations for myself and I truly believe that setting goals and working to achieve them is one of the points of life. But clarity doesn’t come from doing more, buying more, or trying to impress others. It comes from slowing down, taking a pause, and allowing yourself the space to think. Val and I are moving in together and thinking about that milestone made me reflect even more on the life I want to build not just for myself, but for us. It highlighted how important it is to stay aligned with your why and make intentional choices because the small decisions we make now shape the bigger picture of the life we’re creating.
It comes from asking yourself:
-
Why am I doing this?
-
Does this align with the person I want to become?
-
Am I chasing something that truly matters, or just an image?
And one thing that I can see so clearly now is that the answers are usually already inside us. We just need the space to hear them. I know I keep saying this throughout the post but I will continue to say, that’s why reflection is a necessity. It’s what keeps us honest with ourselves, helps us focus our effort on the things that matter and makes sure that all the energy we pour into our goals actually moves us toward fulfillment. As a personal trainer in the gym this is crucial. Training without a clear why, whether it’s strength, confidence, mobility, or overall health this can lead to frustration, burnout, or giving up. The same goes for any goal in life. If your actions aren’t connected to purpose, you’ll likely fall short no matter how much effort you put in.
Reflection is where intention meets action. It’s the space where purpose takes shape. And it’s the pause that allows growth, clarity and meaning to show up in everything we do. Sometimes, the biggest gains in life don’t come from doing more they come from thinking more, listening more, and being more present with yourself.
Sitting in the sun feeling the warmth on my skin becoming more grounded and letting my mind wander freely reminded me that the answers I’ve been looking for aren’t out there from some mentor or guru, they’re already inside me. All we need to do is slow down long enough to notice them.
My personal 5 Main Goals for this year:
After sitting in the sun and reflecting I started thinking clearly about what I really want not just in the next few months but in the bigger picture. Here are the five main goals I’m focused on right now, both personal and business:
-
Build a sustainable fitness and life coaching business
Help others grow and reach their potential while creating something that supports me too. -
Grow as a man and future husband
Be intentional, patient, and thoughtful in how I show up for relationships and life in general. -
Develop a strong personal brand
Share my approach to mindset, resilience and fitness in a way that inspires and connects with the right people. -
Achieve financial stability through multiple income streams
Build freedom and flexibility so I can focus on growth, travel, and long term investments. -
Become grounded in my sense of self and connection with nature
Spend more time reflecting outdoors, appreciating the world around me and reconnecting with what truly matters without distraction.
3 Simple Actionable Steps You Can Take:
-
Check in with your why
Before you start any task, workout or goal, ask yourself: Why am I doing this? Does this align with what I truly want? -
Slow down and reflect regularly
Take even 5–10 minutes a day to pause, breathe and think about your actions. Are they moving you closer to what matters most? -
Align your actions with purpose
Once you know your why, make sure your daily choices reflect it. Show up for yourself, not for anyone else’s expectations.
