“There’s a version where the drive is just as real, just as strong, but it isn’t fused to fear anymore.”
Reflection:
Sometimes the problem isn't that you don't want it badly enough. You actually want it and you know what you're capable of but when it’s time to really go after it and something pulls you back. Maybe it isn't a lack of motivation.. maybe it's fear. What I have come to learn is that sometimes burnout isn't always an empty tank. Sometimes you still have the drive but going all in reminds you of the version of yourself who couldn't stop and got burnt out because of it.
What that can create is a spot where you get stuck between two fears. Push harder and you're afraid you'll burn out again. Slow down and you feel lazy or like you're falling behind. Those two things create a middle ground where it's not really rest and it's not really progress either. You're moving but you're not really going anywhere. You're trying to protect yourself from burning out again but at the same time you're frustrated because you know there's more in you and that's where I think we can start looking at ambition differently.
What I want to shift your perspective on is that maybe the answer isn't to want less. Maybe you don't need to become less driven or stop caring about the things you want. There's a version where the drive is just as real, just as strong but it isn't fused to fear anymore. You can still have big goals. You can still work hard. You can still want to build something meaningful but you don't have to keep using the same patterns that got you burned out in the first place.
Here are some reframes I thought of:
1. You can work hard without making work your entire identity.
Your work can be important without becoming who you are. You can be committed to what you're building and still be present for the rest of your life.
2. You can chase big goals without sacrificing yourself to get there.
You shouldn't have to lose your health, relationships, peace or yourself just to prove how badly you want something.
3. You can go all in without losing yourself because you don't have to burn to build.
Going all in doesn't have to mean running yourself into the ground. It can mean being fully committed while also knowing when it's time to step back, recover and come back ready to go again.
The goal isn't to become less driven it's to learn how to carry your ambition without letting it consume you. It's learning to know when to push and knowing when to recover and maybe most importantly, don't let fear make the decision for you. You can build something great without rebuilding the version of yourself that got burned out trying to build it the first time.
You don't have to want less and you don't have to stop pushing. You just have to learn how to build differently this time. Use the 3 actionable steps to help you find direction/framework to help you start building and remember the goal isn't to want less, it's to build in a way that you can sustain.
3 Actionable Steps
1. Ask yourself: “What am I actually afraid of?”
Before assuming you lack motivation identify what’s holding you back. Are you afraid of burnout, failure, falling behind or losing yourself in the process?
2. Separate hard work from overwork.
Decide what pushing forward actually looks like and decide when you’re going to stop. Give yourself permission to recover without seeing it as laziness.
3. Build without repeating the old pattern.
Pick one goal you’re committed to and pursue it differently this time. Work hard, stay consistent but pay attention to the habits that previously led you to burnout.
